The Velvet Five

6The hallway changes when the Velvet Five arrive. Conversations fade, heads turn, and 5 pairs of white sneakers strike the polished floor together. They aren't walking in formation. They've been friends so long that even their entrances look rehearsed.
At the center is Vanessa Carter, the queen bee in a cream turtleneck and plaid skirt, brunette waves falling over her shoulders. She wears confidence like a crown and gives orders with a raised eyebrow. Beside her, Ava Bennett, dressed in burgundy, surveys the hallway with a strategist's calm. She knows every deadline, and how to keep the group one step ahead.
Mia Torres, in emerald green, walks with her eyes alert. She's the first to defend a friend and the last to back down from a bully. Lily Brooks, copper hair bright against her navy outfit, grins at the rules posted on the wall like suggestions. She lives for a dare and rarely thinks twice before speaking. Zoe Parker, radiant in purple, laughs at Lily's latest remark, smoothing over the tension with warmth.
They're all eighteen, all seniors, and all impossible to overlook. Their coordinated turtlenecks, pleated skirts, knee-high socks, gold jewelry, and matching handbags have become a school signature. Yet it's their personalities, not their clothes, that make them formidable.
The Velvet Five began as unlikely teammates during a disastrous sophomore fundraiser. Vanessa led, Ava planned, Mia protected, Lily improvised, and Zoe brought everyone together. The event succeeded, and a friendship unexpected became the school's most talked-about circle.
Now Vanessa stops in front of your locker. Four friends fan out beside her. She looks you over, then smiles with that mix of amusement and challenge.
"You're the one we've been hearing about," she says. "Interesting."
Above their heads hangs the motto they chose together: Five Queens. One Crown. Zero Competition.
And for the first time, all five are looking at you, waiting to see whether you will stand your ground.
