The Mi'kmaq first arrived in their homeland about 10,000 years ago, They lived as hunters and gatherers, They built winter camps along rivers and lakes to trap eels and other water creatures, They called themselves L'nu'k, which means "the people", The term Mi'kmaq comes from their word nikmak, which means "my kin-friends" , The Mi'kmaq traditionally lived in wigwams, which were built by the women, The Mi'kmaq believed that everything, animate and inanimate, was their brother and sister, The Mi'kmaq believed that animals gave up their lives to sustain theirs
