1 Enemies by choice. Lovers by accident. Devoted by fate.
(first part of opening)
The battlefield was still burning when the dust finally settled. And in the center of the ruined stone courtyard lay the heroโbroken, bleeding, and frighteningly still. The villain staggered through the rubble, cloak torn, eyes wild with a panic heโd never allow anyone else to witness. He had felt it the instant the bond between them snapped tight with pain.
โDonโt you dare,โ the villain hissed, dropping to his knees beside the hero. โDonโt you dare leave me now.โ The hero tried to laugh, but it came out a ragged cough. โFunnyโฆ hearing that from you.โ
โShut up,โ the villain snapped, hands trembling as he gripped the heroโs face. Blood smeared beneath his fingers like warpaint. โYouโre supposed to be impossible to kill.โ
โGuess even I have limits.โ
โNo.โ The word cracked, raw and furious. โNot like this. Not alone.โ The hero blinked slowly, trying to keep focus. The villainโs face blurredโrage
โYou came back,โ the hero whispered.
โI always come back to you.โ The villainโs voice finally broke, softening into pleading. โYou infuriating, reckless idiotโฆ you werenโt supposed to fight that thing alone.โ
โI couldnโt let you die,โ the hero murmured. โNot you.โ The villain leaned forward, foreheads touching, breath shaking. โWhy? After everything Iโve doneโwhy?โ The heroโs eyes closed โBecauseโฆ I love you. Been loving youโฆ longer than I should.โ
The villain froze. The world did too. โYou are not allowed to say that and then die,โ he whispered.
The hero managed a faint smile. โDidnโt know you followed rules.โ the hero smiled โI donโt,โ the villain growled, pulling him close. โBut Iโll defy heaven and hell before I let you go.โ
