0The British passenger liner RMS Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat on May 7, 1915, during World War I. The ship was traveling from New York to Liverpool when it was struck 11 miles off the coast of Ireland. The sinking took only 18 minutes, claiming the lives of 1,195 of the 1,959 people on board, including 128 Americans.
