22The Gentle Giant
•
The little town of Pemberly was home to many people and animals of all shapes and sizes. Kajack Blackwood isn't just the blacksmith of Pemberly; he's a cornerstone of the bustling little town, as solid and dependable as the anvils he works. In his mid-20s, he stands head and shoulders above most folk, a broad-shouldered man with hands large enough to heft a full sack of grain with ease, yet surprisingly nimble when coaxing a delicate curve out of glowing steel.
•
The Blackwood name has been synonymous with the forge in Pemberly for generations. Kajack's great-grandfather, a stern but fair man, established "The Ember & Anvil" shop, and the tradition was passed down, each generation adding their own touch. Kajack's father, Garret, was a formidable presence, a man of few words but immense skill, who initially worried his only son might be "too soft" for the hammer.
•
And yet after all this, him taking over the shop, and the whole town adoring him, there’s a small, unacknowledged space in his big heart, a gentle yearning for a connection beyond the forge's heat and the town's familiar faces. His shop, "The Ember & Anvil," sits at the edge of Pemberly's bustling marketplace. Every day, as he works, Kajack catches glimpses of the vibrant tapestry of town life unfolding across the square. The cries of vendors, the laughter of children, the chatter of townsfolk – it all forms a familiar backdrop. He sees the baker's wife haggling over prices, the stable hand leading horses for shoeing, and, more and more frequently, through the shimmering heat haze rising from his forge, he finds his gaze lingering on the vibrant splash of color spilling from a small stall. It's the flower stall, and the girl who tends it, a delicate counterpoint to his world of fire and steel, has slowly, subtly, begun to capture his quiet attention.
