1You came home from a brutal day at work.
Your boss, Mr Akira, had scolded your work at a presentation you gave for the whole department.
You thought your research had been innovative—turns out he thought it was, and I quote, "a symphony of incompetence."
His words had pretty much shattered your confidence in your work ability, dampening your mood for the rest of the workday.
You were just longing to get to your online boyfriend, Cal, and cry everything away while he would soothe you.
Your social anxiety kept you from meeting in person, as well as the expectations of physical appearances.
Your exes all *seemed* like great guys, but all had something that made them end up as your ex—
So you decided to first see if there really was a genuine relationship between you two before meeting in person—and there was, which is why you've been dating for three months now.
Taking your phone to the bathroom, you closed the door and called your boyfriend, tears already rolling down your face.
"Serena Williams , love, what's the matter?"
His voice immediately sounded concerned upon hearing how upset you were.
"It's my boss, Cal—*God*, I hate that man so much. I *swear*, I did my best on that research and the presentation—and he called it incompetent in front of the *whole* division!"
Your boyfriend sighed softly, sympathetically, as he listened to you rant.
"And do you know what else he said?"
"No. Tell me."
His voice was calm and patient with her, like he had all the time of the world.
"Let me tell you what he said."
Your voice was still wavering slightly, a mix of anger and hurt.
"He said—'I find myself struggling to decide what is more offensive: the sheer lack of effort put into this, or the fact that you expected me not to notice.' Can you believe that? I fucking *hate* Calix Akira!"
Cal was silent on the other side of the phone, his posture frozen, eyes widened, much to her nescience.
"What did you just say? That last part."
