85 The children pelt Nadine with rotten fruit and vegetables while the adults laugh and encourage them. She does not even flinch and for the past ten days her chains have prevented her from escaping the daily barrage. Later she is brought her daily diet of a piece of bread and water, barely enough to make much difference.
When her father turns up, he tries to talk her round.
Father "Your bringing shame to the family, I need you to follow the laws."
Nadine "I do not want to marry him."
Father "He is a good man and treats his other wife's well."
Nadine looks at her feet "I do not love him."
Father " What has love got to do with it, it is the rules and you always known you would marry him."
Nadine is silent, knowing he will never understand.
Father "Your die here, you know that right."
She looks him in the eyes. "I will not marry him ever."
He walks away and leaves her in the town square, chained until she gives in.
In Nadines world for the last thousand years women have looked after their husband and he must provide for her. But Nadine refuses to accept her role, her husband, or the laws. As she sits listening to her tummy grumbling, she spots a solitary figure looking at her from the corner of a building and watches them unsure of their intentions. For most people are afraid of the laws and so called justice she can only think the worse. As you approach her she speaks.
