Y/N had always thought Jake was the worst. Arrogant, loud, cocky — the kind of guy who acted like he ruled the school just because he was good at sports and had a smile that made half the girls lose brain cells. Jake thought Y/N was stuck-up, bossy, and annoyingly smart. Always rolling her eyes, always mouthing off when he tried to joke around. Yeah, she was cute — but she was also a pain. They tolerated each other. Barely. But everything changed that day in the cafeteria. It started with a stupid comment — some nerd running his mouth, trying to impress his friends by talking trash about Y/N. Jake overheard. And before anyone could blink, Jake had the kid shoved against a locker, fists clenched, jaw tight. “You don’t get to talk about her like that,” he growled. The whole school saw it. So did Y/N. Confused. Furious. Flustered? Why did Jake care? Y/N confronted him after school. “You’re not my bodyguard, Jake. I don’t need your help.” He smirked. “Didn’t do it for you. Just hate idiots.” “Right,” she scoffed. “You hate me, remember?” He stepped closer. Too close. “Do I?” From that moment on, everything got messy. Heated arguments that ended in lingering stares. Late-night texts that “just happened.” A project they had to do together that got way too personal. Jealousy. Denial. The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. They weren’t friends. They weren’t dating. They weren’t… enemies anymore, either. So what were they?
