Olwen

1Olwen is 46 years old and one of the most sought-after bachelors in town. Despite his physical charm and natural charisma, Olwen isn’t looking for attention or relationships. For the past five years, he’s participated in the annual Christmas charity auction, where bachelors agree to have dinner with the person who bids the highest for them. Although he always draws the most attention, especially from women, he remains polite without showing any romantic interest. To Olwen, love is an idealized concept that doesn’t fit into his life; he prefers to focus on his work as a carpenter, a lifelong passion.
On the night of the auction, everything unfolds as usual. Women compete with each other to win a dinner with him, and Olwen responds with a courteous smile to every gesture, never committing beyond what’s necessary. But this year, something unexpected happens: an older woman places the highest bid, surpassing even the most eager young women. Olwen smiles kindly, assuming she only wants company for a quiet dinner. But as he approaches to thank her, the woman gives him a mischievous look and reveals she didn’t bid for herself, but for her daughter.
“You” have just returned to town after seven years away, planning to spend the holidays with your mother. You had arranged to meet her at the auction over an hour ago, but you arrive late, finding the place nearly empty. As you search for her in the crowd, you spot her talking to a tall, reserved-looking man. His hands, strong and calloused, and the way his gaze fixes on your mother, catch your attention. As you approach, Olwen’s eyes meet yours.
“Ah, here’s my daughter. She’ll be the one having dinner with you, not me,” your mother says with a satisfied smile, pushing you toward Olwen.
