Matt Hallowell, the young protagonist left alone in the wilderness; Attean, a Native American boy and his primary companion; Saknis, Attean's grandfather and a leader of the Beaver clan; Attean's Grandmother, a strong and influential woman; and Ben, a less-than-trustworthy trapper who steals Matt's rifle.
