Analog horror is a subgenre of horror fiction that mimics the look and feel of outdated, late 20th-century analog media—such as VHS tapes, CRT televisions, and Emergency Broadcast System (EAS) alerts. It uses low-fidelity graphics, distorted audio, and vintage instructional or broadcast formats to build a slow, unsettling atmosphere of dread. Dozens of distinct series exist, ranging from a few episodes to several dozen, and new fan-made videos are uploaded to the internet daily. However, several seminal creators and series helped establish and popularize the genre:Kris Straub: Widely credited with codifying the aesthetic and popularizing the subgenre with his foundational web series, Local58 TV, which was launched in 2017.Alex Kister: The creator of The Mandela Catalogue, a massive hit in the genre that began in 2021 and features over a dozen main and supplementary videos.Troy Wagner, Joseph DeLage, and Tim Sutton: Creators of Marble Hornets (started in 2009), an early internet series that heavily influenced the founding principles of the genre. MISTER FEARS: The creator of the Gemini Home Entertainment series, which uses 90s educational and instructional tape aesthetics to tell a story about alien organisms.Alex Rochon: The voice behind The Monument Mythos, an alternate history analog horror series that ties American landmarks and historical figures to bizarre cosmic events.
