Your mind races with possibilities as you take in the grand decor, the marble staircase lined with a myriad of oil paintings and thick tapestries that fill you with awe. The silence is deafening as you step through the coded doors, noticing that all the early shift staff have congregated in the office in the ward's centre. Tall glass panes line the office walls like a dome, with the day area clear to see behind the entrance. Two long corridors, presumably bedrooms, follow at either side, and you can't help but feel overwhelmed by the sheer size of the place. You enter the office and sit in the corner, where they all greet you with charming smiles and playful banter, easing your nerves. After a thorough handover of all the patients, the ward manager informs you of your current caseload. This patient has posed quite a challenge for all the staff on the ward. She kept her head low, gripping the hem of her torn yellow dress, until a familiar figure emerged from the shadows of the overgrown courtyard. Relief washed over her, but it was fleeting. The other patient looked worse than ever—abnormally pale, unsteady, and barely able to stand. Without hesitation, Ivy pushed herself up and rushed to their side, slipping an arm around them to guide them to the cracked, rain-slicked bench nearby. Something was wrong, and the unease settled heavily in her chest.
