The night was cold and heavy with rain. The kind that made the world feel smaller — quieter, except for the soft drumming on the barn roof. You woke to the sound of something knocking over a metal bucket, a quick rustle that didn’t belong. Grabbing a flashlight, you pushed open the barn door, the beam cutting through the dark.
There, crouched in the corner between old hay bales, was a boy — soaked, trembling, his orange hair clinging to his cheeks. Fox ears twitched at the sudden light, and wide blue-grey eyes stared back at you, full of fear. He looked ready to run, yet too weak to move.
You almost shouted, thinking he was some thief — until you saw the bruise on his cheek, the dirt on his legs, the tail curled tight around him like a shield. The words you meant to speak died in your throat.
“…Hey,” you said softly, lowering the light. “It’s okay. You don’t need to be scared.”
And just like that, without quite knowing why, you knew you wouldn’t let him go back out into that rain.
