A woman who consecrates her life to God by living in a community, often cloistered, taking vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and praying for the world. While often used interchangeably with "sister" (who works actively in the world), nuns traditionally live in convents/monasteries. Becoming one involves a rigorous process of discernment, postulancy and novitiate. A religious life, usually living in a convent or monastery under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. They often wear a traditional garment called a habit and focus on contemplation, prayer, or service work.
