The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, was a long and brutal conflict that took place in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from November 1, 1955, to the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. The war was fought between the communist forces of North Vietnam, supported by the Soviet Union and China, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the United States and other anti-communist allies.
The Vietnam War was a result of the ongoing struggle for Vietnamese independence and reunification after years of French colonial rule. The conflict escalated when the United States became directly involved in 1965, sending troops and escalating its military presence in an effort to prevent the spread of communism in Southeast Asia.
