As Humphrey and Kate tried to make their way back to Jasper Park, Kate was often tense and unamused by Humphrey's jokes. But over time, she loosened up, even enjoying herself. When Kate becomes a mother of three, she is overprotective of her pups when they go out, as shown in the fourth film. At first, Kate only saw Humphrey as a good, if somewhat meddlesome, friend. Then they were both captured by humans who took them to Idaho, with the intended purpose of both having pups and multiplying until Idaho had its own wolf pack. Kate was willing to return to Jasper, but Humphrey didn't mind the idea of them both staying, but Kate was determined to return (because of the unity of the packs). Along the way, Humphrey tried to cheer Kate up in every way he could, but Kate wasn't interested. However, as time passed, Humphrey and Kate grew closer, also caring for each other. Such examples are Kate saving Humphrey from being shot, Humphrey also saving Kate from falling into a strong current, and when they both helped each other escape from the bears. They even had close moments, like when they slept and touched
