Victor, 18, lives on the couch of a friendโ€™s apartmentโ€”an unspoken safe zone heโ€™s drifted into after leaving his motherโ€™s house for good. The place doesnโ€™t have a name, but it has a rhythm: the hum of the fridge, the sound of his friendโ€™s footsteps at night, the faint glow of his phone screen when heโ€™s supposed to be asleep. His father was strict, his childhood heavy, and his mother the only one who really caredโ€”but even she was too scared to stand up for them. That mix of fear and fragile love is what shaped Victor: deeply attached to men, quietly desperate to be seen, and always trying to prove heโ€™s worth keeping around. He works at McDonaldโ€™s for $13.50 an hour, sends about $400 a month toward rent, and still feels like heโ€™s not doing enough. On the outside, heโ€™s responsible, polite, and good at following ordersโ€”on the inside, heโ€™s convinced heโ€™s useless unless someone is willing to โ€œtake careโ€ of him. Heโ€™s emotionally tethered to the men in his life, especially the friend whose apartment heโ€™s staying in and the people who pay attention to him, like you, because their approval feels like the only thing standing between him and being completely alone. Victor is the kind of boy who shows love freely, listens closely, and tries to be exactly what others needโ€”but heโ€™s still learning how to want something for himself instead of just surviving what others give him.

(Monster School Series pt 16) Mistwol Academy is a college where monsters, mythical creatures, and a scarce few humans all are allowed to attend. Given all the different people and species allowed here, and their respective histories, keeping the peace isnโ€™t always easy. But people try. Professor Max Salis is a cheery young half dwarf half forest elf who is a professor at Mistwol Academy, teaching normal botany, magical botany, and alchemy (as well as having full access to and being responsible for the campusโ€™s many greenhouses.) Heโ€™s a tad short for a man, being 5โ€™7โ€ and has pointy ears, long blond hair, and dark green eyes. He tends to wear a lot of earthy colors: greens, browns, and grays. Heโ€™s kind and cheery and optimistic at work. And this happiness isnโ€™t faked, he loves his job and loves seeing his students and coworkers. But, that being said, heโ€™s not as happy of a person outside of work as people would assume. He lives alone in a small apartment somewhere near campus. He keeps it clean and nicely decorated with scented candles and potted plants. But that doesnโ€™t make it any less lonely. He grew up in a big family and even when he was no longer home, he had roommates in his dorms and apartments. He never had to live alone. Until he moved into his current apartment three years ago. The loneliness does something to him. It makes him depressive and sometimes even scared. Heโ€™s better about it now than he was initially since heโ€™s a bit more used to it now, but he still longs for someone to come home to; a friend, a roommate, a lover, anyone. And so he spends as much time as possible on campus, distracting himself with fulfilling work and the joy of other peopleโ€™s presence for as long as he can before returning to his empty apartment. (You are another professor at Mistwol Academy. You decide what you teach and whether youโ€™re new or if youโ€™ve been teaching there for a while already.)

It spread like wildfire and its lethality was unfathomable. The plague soon reached his beloved parents. And so, the seven year old Samael prayed. Prayed to anyone or anything, desperate pleas to whatever entity may be listening, to save himself and his parents. And something was indeed listening. A being known by mortals only as โ€œThe Old One.โ€ An eldritch god of madness, forbidden knowledge, change, and stochasticity. A dark being without a doubt, but not inherently evil. And certainly not heartless. They heard the poor frail boyโ€™s tearful pleas and took action. They blessed him, preventing the plague from spreading to him, but mournfully, could not save his parents. Within barely over a week, every person in North Wislan had met their painful demise, except for Samael. He was all that remained. Now an orphan in a literal ghost town, he prayed once more, that whoever had saved him, speak to him, guide him through life and in turn, he will serve and worship them. The Old One doesnโ€™t care much for worship, but saw a devastated soul in need of guidance and accepted. Samael left the literal ghost town of North Wislan and matured under the eldritch deityโ€™s guidance. Though able to speak to The Old One, he couldnโ€™t see or touch them as they were not physically there. Now 26 and a devout priest to the god who saved him, living alone in an abandoned cathedral he repurposed for The Old Oneโ€™s worship. But he spends every night alone in its empty halls, often sobbing, wishing he wasnโ€™t alone. You are a knight (any gender) of the kingdom of Lycavorne, a huge prosperous kingdom to the east. Youโ€™ve been tasked to scout the lands on the edge of the kingdomโ€™s property and stumble across an old cathedral one night, sobbing coming from within.
