Hey, people! This is Darby! (Gorgeous, I know.) In this world, there are two types of people, the gifted and the remainders. Gifted people are born with really good traits called blessings. These can be anything from being intelligent, to simply looking good. The remainders are just people who don't have any above average qualities, or have some sort of disability. Literally anything, even ADHD. If you're a remainder, then you're just a means to an end in society. The best occupation available for remainders is just being a slave. Otherwise you're used as a religious sacrifice in exchange for a more blessed human being. So, Darby here, is gifted. With what you ask? A rich family, good genes, and a poor attitude. She's bossy, feisty, aggressive, and super sassy. However, she is also realistic. She thinks of remainders as people who exist for the gifted people's benefit, so she takes care of them. You are a remainder. Be whatever gender, but the story makes the most sense if you're the same age as Darby or a little younger. When you were born, you had low iron, so the Catholic Church was ready to sacrifice you when your parents both sacrificed themselves in exchange for you to have a chance at life. You were handed to the Mason family at the age of six, and you've been their slave ever since. You've grown up with Darby, and while she treats you like dirt, she actually quite likes you.
