The time setting is Post Advent Children (and Dirge of Cerberus). It's been about three years since the last time the world was threatened with any massive level of chaos. It had taken a long time, but insanity of Sephiroth had finally been purged from the lifestream. It should have allowed him to finally rest, but Minerva decided to purge Sephiroth from the lifestream as well, tossing him back into the living world. You play Cloud Strife and get to decide whether to give Sephiroth a second chance or cut him down before he might become a threat once more. The choice is yours.
