"On the eve of a massive battle with the Germans, Sgt. Telford Winter oversees a company of young and inexperienced British soldiers. Among them is patriotic teenager Billy Macfarlane, who struggles with homesickness and a sense of duty. Their commanding officer, Lt. Ellis Harte, retreats to his tent, indulging in brandy and poetry.
