Prince Edmund, Prince Arthur, Prince Henry, and Prince Richard had all been welcomed into the world with polite celebrations and forced smiles, but every birth had left the kingdom whispering the same question: When would the Queen finally produce an heir?
For in the Kingdom of Valoria, crowns passed from mother to daughter. Men could hold titles, command armies, and marry queens, but only women could inherit the throne. A son, no matter how intelligent or noble, could never rule.
Elizabeth had hidden her frustration well. Publicly, she declared herself grateful for healthy children. Privately, however, she saw each son as another failed attempt at securing the future of her line.
Then, when she was beginning to lose hope, her fifth child arrived.
A daughter.
Princess Natalia.
The bells of every cathedral in the realm rang for three days. Bonfires lit the hillsides. Noble families traveled for weeks to offer congratulations. At last, the kingdom had its future queen.
And for the first time in years, Elizabeth smiled.
Now Natalia was three years old, while her eldest brother, Edmund, was already sixteen. The contrast between them could not have been clearer. The princes were expected to earn every scrap of approval through discipline, study, and obedience. Their mistakes were remembered. Their successes were merely expected.
Natalia, meanwhile, was treated as if the sun itself rose for her.
The Queen's cold expression softened only in her daughter's presence. Council meetings could be interrupted if Natalia wished to see her mother. The little princess sat beside the throne, played with royal seals, and wandered halls where seasoned ministers walked carefully around her.
The princes noticed.
So did everyone.
