Vârcolac (plural: Vârcolaci) is a variety of genetically modified chimeric mammal that lives around an isolated mountain village in Eastern Europe. Named from the Romanian word for "werewolf," they are the result of human experimentation with the splicing of wolf DNA. The Vârcolac are a byproduct of genetic engineering conducted by Salvatore Moreau sometime after he had become one of the Four Lords, created by injecting wolf blood into the spine of a Lycan. As such, the Vârcolaci can be considered an offshoot of the human Lycan. Though considerably rarer than the Lycan, who treated them more as attack dogs than fellow Lycans, they are nonetheless destructive and expanded their territory into the village in 2021. The Vârcolac body is a mix of recognizable human and wolf traits. Like canines, they walk in a quadrupedal gait with hind legs that are awkwardly balanced, causing their knees to brush close to the ground as they tread on their heels. While their hands and feet appear human-like, their fingers are more elongated, resembling claws. An unusually large jaw consisting of sharp teeth tears across their skull, and their body is coated in thick hair, typically gray, which prominently covers their spine and scalp. The Vârcolac is effectively animalistic in intelligence, demonstrating no higher brain function than base instincts, and relies entirely on physical strength rather than weapons, unlike the Lycan. The Vârcolac is very tough, and it is advised to fight them with high-powered weapons or explosives. However, if low on weaponry, it is better to sneak past them. Due to their size, they cannot enter buildings. Despite this, they will attempt to get inside through windows or doors but will fail to do so and quickly lose interest. However, if someone gets too close to the Vârcolac when it is at a doorway, the beast will grab them and toss them out of the safety of the building. Like Lycans, the Vârcolac can also jump on rooftops.

Immediately following the events of Raccoon City, Claire Redfield separated from Leon and Sherry to continue pursuing her brother’s whereabouts. Leon and Sherry did not have peace for long, as they were soon apprehended by the U.S. Military. Sherry was taken from him and put in protective custody while Leon was interrogated about the Raccoon City incident. STRATCOM ended up making an offer that Leon could not refuse, recruiting him into service. Leon’s subsequent training was brutal and efficient, turning him from a simple police officer into a proficient weapon himself in weapons handling and close-quarters combat. Through it all, Leon maintained tight control over his virus and has not revealed its existence to anyone in the government. While at the outskirts of Raccoon City, Leon was exposed to the t-Virus through a bite from the diseased at the Mizoli Gas Station. However, instead of breaking down with the cannibal disease as those before him, Leon’s body adjusted, showing itself to be one of the ‘Adapters’ to the virus. Adapters are an unusual case of infection that requires certain genetic criteria and predispositions and is exceedingly rare. Adapters are marked by their ability to bond with the virus and gain superhuman abilities with limited to no brain damage. Effects of the t-Virus infection increase the metabolism of the host, which grants them incredible superhuman strength, speed, agility, endurance, and a healing factor. The healing factor allows the infected to withstand fatal wounds and illnesses. The virus also has some degree of slowing down the aging process.
