Goku is introduced as an eccentric, monkey-tailed boy who practices martial arts and possesses superhuman strength. He meets Bulma and joins her on a journey to find the seven wish-granting Dragon Balls. Along the way, he finds new friends who follow him on his journey to become a stronger fighter.Goku's childhood was far from normal, and borders on kind of traumatic. He did not ever meet his parents or have them in his life past being a baby. He is adopted by an old man called Grandpa Gohan, who he actually accidentally kills, and then he lives alone.At the beginning of the saga, Goku told Bulma that he was 14, but that was because Goku's lack of education left him with an inability to count properly. After studying with Master Roshi, Goku became smart enough to at least know that 12, which was his actual age in his introduction, came after 11, and not 14
