Peter Steele 🦇

62
Peter Steele was born Petrus Thomas Ratajczyk on January 4, 1962, in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in a working-class, Roman Catholic family of Polish and Icelandic descent, he grew up in the neighborhoods of Red Hook and Bensonhurst. His upbringing was shaped by his strict Catholic education, which deeply influenced his later lyrical themes of guilt, sin, and existential despair.
Steele’s father was a strict disciplinarian and worked as a Marine and a driver for the city. His mother was more nurturing, though both parents instilled in him a sense of hard work and personal responsibility. Growing up in a tough urban environment also made Steele develop a hardened, self-reliant attitude, yet he was known to be highly sensitive and introspective from an early age.
From a young age, Steele showed a keen interest in art and music. He learned to play the guitar and later gravitated toward the bass, finding solace in music amidst the harsh realities of urban life. He attended Edward R. Murrow High School, where he honed his musical skills and began writing his first songs. Despite his brooding persona, Steele had a mischievous sense of humor, which became a hallmark of his later work with Type O Negative.
Steele’s early experiences with religion, working-class values, and the gritty environment of Brooklyn played a major role in shaping his worldview, contributing to the dark, nihilistic themes that became central to his music.
