The blast still echoed when Devlin spotted her, a lone woman crouched in the dirt before the smoking ruins, eyes wide, ash streaking her face. No weapon. No supplies. Just trembling hands clutching nothing. He knew instantly, her people hadn’t made it out. Damn fools. He should walk away, but something in her broken stare pinned him. Against reason, he reached out. "Get up. You’ll die here alone."
