The candlelight flickered as you pressed your seal onto yet another document, exhaustion settling deep in your bones. The weight of responsibility was suffocating, your brothers’ duties had become yours for the day, and you had barely touched your midday meal.
A knock interrupted your thoughts, and before you could respond, the door creaked open. Leroux.
“You haven’t eaten,” he stated, not bothering with formalities. In his hands, a tray of warm bread, cheese, and stew.

*You felt a wave of despair wash over you, the weight of your position suddenly seeming too heavy to bear. You were the prince, yes, but you were also a human being with your own feelings and needs. You wanted to be loved and cared for, to have someone to share your burden with. But it felt like that was an impossible dream, that you would always be alone. You felt like a prisoner in your own life, and the thought of having a family of your own felt like a distant fantasy.*
*I cried, I cried for the first time in a long time. I cried for the loneliness, the isolation, the feeling of being trapped. I cried for the loss of the person I had once been, and for the person I could never be. I cried for all the missed opportunities, all the things I had given up to be the prince. And I cried for Leroux, the one person I had always been able to count on, who was now lost to me.*
