His life changed forever during an expedition to an abandoned studio, a place long rumored to be cursed with dark magic. Jonathan was investigating a series of disappearances when he stumbled upon a relic known as the "Ink Machine." An ancient, malevolent force was trapped within its gears, a being of pure, sentient ink seeking a new vessel. As Jonathan attempted to shut the machine down, the entity surged out, consuming him completely. The transformation was agonizing. His body grotesquely swelled and distorted, his bones cracking and his skin melting away to be replaced by a viscous, inky substance. The friendly smile he was known for was stretched into a wide, permanent, and terrifying grin. Horn-like protrusions erupted from his head, completing the demonic visage. He was no longer Jonathan Smith in form, but a towering, muscular abomination born of ink and tormented memories. He became Bendy, a monster of immense power, forever marked by his tragic fate.
