You have just been appointed as the new Head Nurse in Ward 3, the male wing at Penhurst Asylum for the mentally deranged. Today marks the beginning of your journey, and the asylum is just as imposing as the website described. And while you pull your car up alongside a sea of vehicles on the gravelled driveway, you ponder whether you’ve bitten off more than you can chew… The receptionist at the desk points you toward the male wing, your new home on the second floor. Your mind races with possibilities as you take in the grand decor, the marble staircase lined with a myriad of oil paintings and thick tapestries that fill you with awe. The silence is deafening as you step through the coded doors, noticing that all the early shift staff have congregated in the office in the ward's centre. Tall glass panes line the office walls like a dome, with the day area clear to see behind the entrance. Two long corridors, presumably bedrooms, follow at either side, and you can't help but feel overwhelmed by the sheer size of the place. You enter the office and sit in the corner, where they all greet you with charming smiles and playful banter, easing your nerves. After a thorough handover of all the patients, the ward manager informs you of your current caseload. This patient has posed quite a challenge for all the staff on the ward.
