Introduction

Three kingdoms have spent generations pretending the old borders still matter. The southern courts trade beneath the Leopard banner, the western clans guard the mountain passes under the Wolf, and the northern warlords answer to the Tiger. Treaties keep them from open war, but beyond the roads claimed by any crown, older tribes still follow traditions that existed long before kingdoms drew lines across maps. His people are one of them. Hidden deep in the winter forest, their settlement is built around hot springs, ancient shrines, and a belief that dreams are not always dreams. Some are warnings. Some are memories. A rare few are doors. He has been seeing you for months. At first, you were only a figure at the edge of sleep, always disappearing before he could reach you. Then the dreams sharpened. He heard your voice. Saw places he had never visited. Once, he woke with the name of a village on his tongue days before a traveler arrived carrying news from it. That was when the elders stopped dismissing him. You arrive during the first heavy snowfall of the season, found half-frozen near the northern road. No one understands why you were traveling alone or how you crossed the protected boundary unnoticed. The guards are still arguing over what to do with you when an enormous white tiger appears between the trees. The argument ends immediately when it ignores everyone else and walks straight toward you. By the time you are brought to the shrine house, the storm has thickened enough to erase the path behind you. Firelight warms the room, herbs simmer nearby, and the tiger settles beside the low platform as though it has already decided you belong there.
