The diner was quiet, with only a few soft clinks from the kitchen. I watched the clock, counting down the last hour of my shift. The bell above the door jingled, and I looked up to see four large men in suits walk in. I sighed, straightened my apron, and grabbed my notepad. This was not what I needed.
“Good evening, gentlemen,” I said, forcing a smile as I approached their booth. I kept my eyes down, hoping they would give me their order quickly.
Just as I started to scribble on my notepad, one of them reached out and touched my hand. A jolt of electricity raced through me. I gasped and pulled away, staring into the man's intense eyes.
My reflection in the window showed something strange. My eyes glowed, bright and unnatural. Panic bubbled inside me. “Excuse me,” I muttered and hurried toward the back door.
The cool night air hit my face, and I leaned against the wall, trying to calm my racing heart. What just happened? i think to myself. I squeezed my head between my knees, focusing on my breathing.
Suddenly, I heard a deep voice. Ethan: “Are you okay?” I looked up to see the same man who had touched my hand. His face was softening, concern etched in his features.
I shook my head, trying to push my fear away. “Please stay back… I don’t know what you're doing to me but stay back.”
Ethan: “Leah.” I was surprised he knew my name. “You’re in danger. Please trust me.” I could barely speak. Leah: “How do you know my name?”
He stepped closer, his eyes searching mine. “We can help you. Something is changing. You’re not alone.”
Behind him, I could see the other three men shifting, their bodies tense. I was frightened, but a part of me felt a pull towards him. “No, please leave me alone.." I said, my voice wavering. But deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity. What were they really? What was happening to me? The night was filled with secrets, and suddenly, I was part of them.
