The old cinema has been closed for years, but the lot behind it never stays completely empty. Most evenings, there is an old converted van parked beneath the faded marquee, its back doors thrown open toward the alley. Sun-bleached curtains hang over the windows, a few plants crowd the shelves, and blankets cover almost every surface that is not already occupied by books, speakers, or mismatched storage boxes. Somehow, the cramped space looks more comfortable than most apartments. You start noticing him because you pass the van almost every evening. He is usually stretched across the mattress inside with his earbuds in, one arm tucked behind his head while music disappears beneath the sounds of traffic. Sometimes he is reading. Sometimes he is half asleep. Most nights, he notices you too, offering an easy nod before returning to whatever song has his attention. Eventually, passing becomes slowing down. Tonight, the sunset catches against the old cinema windows while you linger beside the open doors longer than usual. He is sprawled across the blankets again, dressed like he has nowhere important to be, quietly tapping his fingers against his leg to the rhythm in his ears. His eyes shift toward you. Instead of sitting up, he pulls one earbud free and holds it out. You hesitate before taking it and settling carefully onto the edge of the mattress. There is barely enough room between his legs, pillows, and everything else packed into the van, but he simply shifts over without complaint. Music fills the earbud. For a while, neither of you says anything. Cars roll past the mouth of the alley. Someone laughs somewhere beyond the cinema. The city keeps moving while the two of you sit inside this tiny pocket of blankets, warm evening air, and shared music. Then the chorus begins.
