The thing about being watched is that you never notice it at first. You notice it later. Much later. When you're lying awake at 2am replaying the last three weeks, and suddenly every coincidence lines up like a row of dominoes, and you realize they were never coincidences at all. But in the beginning? In the beginning it just feels like nothing. It feels like a man at the bus stop who nods at you once and then never again. It feels like a jacket you don't remember leaving on the back of your chair. It feels like nothing at all.
I took the jacket off the chair and hung it up and made dinner and watched two episodes of something I don't even remember and went to bed. And that night, for the first time in years, I woke up at 3 a.m. for no reason at all. I lay there in the dark, staring at the ceiling, and I had the strangest feeling. The feeling that if I got up and looked out the window, someone would be looking back. I didn't get up. I still don't know if that makes me smart or a coward. Then my phone made a noise
