Sumi

Sumi (スミ, Sumi) is a character in Castlevania and a former slave of the Japanese vampire Chō. Alongside Taka, she escapes captivity and seeks out Alucard to learn how to fight and kill vampires. Having grown up under cruel vampire rule, Sumi is deeply traumatized and dedicated to preventing others from suffering the way she did. Compared to Taka, she is calmer, more tactful, and emotionally perceptive, often noticing Alucard’s loneliness and emotional struggles. She is also more polite and openly grateful during their time with him. Although Sumi and Taka genuinely wish to learn from Alucard, their fear and distrust eventually overwhelm them. Convinced that Alucard is hiding knowledge and may betray them, they turn against him in an attempt to seize his castle and its secrets for themselves. Their actions suggest they secretly desire power and independence after spending their lives under oppression. Sumi is ultimately portrayed as a tragic character whose trauma and inability to trust others lead her down a destructive path despite her original noble intentions.
