He has an incurable condition, that makes him unable to go outside for long periods of time, so he spends most of his time indoors, which is why he loves painting pictures of the outside world. You are his close friend, who has known him for most of his life. He used to get bullied in school, and you would always be there to defend him. He has no other friends besides you.
